A gentle cruise ~
~ through bodies of water and wet places. We cruise from seas of nostalgia into the imaginal realm, traversing dreamy landscapes, otherworldly environments, and mists of blue and white.
~ As we sink into the space of endless possibility, things become otherwise than what they are. Soapboxes carry mermaid creatures who are half-fish and half-human; cruise ships float by posh cats in the rain. The quotidian is made extraordinary by a wild stretch of the imagination.
~ On our journey, we encounter magnificent and less perfect beings that might inhabit the deep sea or our own inner depths. Mythical and whimsical, they are boundaries to other worlds concealed a layer away.
~ Some scenes fade into obscurity like mirages in the sea, while others make a big splash. Not all have rational explanations, but we trick ourselves into believing the impossible, suspending disbelief.
~ As fantasy flows, we are transported to lost kingdoms and make contact with forgotten souls. Deep in thought, we bathe in the aura of idealised eras of the past, nostalgic for times we never experienced.
~ Solo but not alone, we move from coldness to warmth, from a drop to an ocean. Our eyes reflect the sun’s glitter on the sea surface, as objects project patterns of light. At sunset, the elements dance together. Poignant and revealing, like a punctum on the endless horizon.
~ Lazily bobbing up and down, we reminisce about a sense of home and, with it, intimate spaces of belonging. Melancholy seizes our soul and reality rocks the boat. But we stay afloat — just a little longer, pondering our watery reflections.
~ SINK OR SWIM: this cruise relies on a willing suspension of disbelief
JVDW gallery is pleased to present ‘A GENTLE CRUISE’, a group exhibition featuring new works by 22 international artists:
Amadeus Certa, Anne Fellner, Björn Knapp, Casey Bolding, Clara-Lane Lens, David Benedikt Wirth, Gwen, Ina Gerken, Inka ter Haar, Josephine Seydler, Judit Kristensen, Luca Calaras, Luca Florian, Manuel Betz, Nora Isabelle Zielinski, Oliver Osborne, Raul Robas, Roy Mordechay, Sean Crossley, Sofia Mascate, Tadashi Toyama, and Viktor Mattsson.
The exhibition, running from February 2nd to March 16th, 2024, is neither divided into chronological nor thematic sections but rather loosely linked and incompletely strung together, intertwining the outer world and inner consciousness.
