Tomomi Yamakawa was born in Osaka, Japan in 1993. Class of Hassan Khan, Peter Fischli, Josef Strau, graduated at Staedel Schule in 2021. Functionality, affordability, and signifiers-how people and objects interact in everyday life. The artist derives this interest from her background, a degree in information design. Her older works document her discovery of hidden functionality in everyday life. This starting point led Yamakawa to the problematic of the documentary and the fictional, the realistic and the artificial. She believes there is something special about meaningful feelings and appreciates the little niches and oddities that alternative methods can create. Her last two solo exhibitions were Tomomis group show at Red Tracy in Denmark in 2021 and long life at JVDW in Düsseldorf in 2022. She works with different media and materials.
